President Obama and the new American look

I am surrounded by friends rejoicing for Barack
Obama's triumph. I am happy too. Disappointed as I am by George W. Bush's
policies, by the political isolationism of the United States, by the absurdity
(yes, I know about the actual reasons...) of the refusal to join the Kyoto
protocol, I also hope the new American President will steer the U.S. in a
better direction.

Lessons taught, lessons learned
During the last two days I was teaching to a
class at the University of Salento in Lecce, Italy. The topic: how to become an
"Rfid entrepreneur". I asked a group young guys and girls to imagine an
innovative application of Rfid technology (radio frequency tags which add
memory to any kind of object and let them share their memory with other
objects, computers or people). I asked them to get together in groups organized
around different application areas (safety, public utility services, fashion,
sports...) and to work for a couple of hours imagining how these tiny tags could
enable new services and products.

Four days in Rome as a beggar
A couple of weeks ago I spent four days in Rome
as a beggar. I did my best, creating a hidden identity, living only with the
money given to me by people I asked, not revealing to the police what I was
doing, sleeping at the train station, talking to many inhabitants of the
"underworld".

"Yes, Nuke"
Last week I had an inspiring talk
with Mark Lynas, age 35, British
journalist and author of the bestselling book Six Degrees. We
talked about global warming, renewable energies, sustainable policies. Then I
asked him about nuclear energy. Lynas has always been a radical ecologist, but
he responded to my question saying: ´I was actually against nuclear power. The
problem of waste was not fixed in the past as it is not now. But the global
warming problem is now too serious to keep fighting about nuclear energy.

Getting into The Cloud
There was a
time when information, all information, was related to a place. There was
always a piece of paper, a drawer, a server or a computer where we could find
it, update it and delete it.
Yesterday I
was having a series of meetings with some engineers from Ibm, in a big
convention in Montpellier, France. The Topic of the meetings: The Cloud. The
capital letters are necessary, because The Cloud is not just a new technology,
nor is it simply a way to manage our data. It is a critical shift in the way
all of us relate with our society.

The Rise of Non-Aligned of Energy

There is
something happening in South America. And it has a lot to do with oil and gas.
Evo Morales and Hugo Chavez, presidents of Bolivia and Venezuela, expelled
yesterday the US ambassadors from their respective countries. The day after,
Honduran president Manuel Zelaya suddenly suspended an important public event
with the local US ambassador.
The United
States responded by quickly revoking the credentials from the Bolivian and
Venezuelan ambassadors in the U.S., Mario Gustavo and Bernardo Alivarez, in a
growing enpasse that could undermine the stability of the South American
continent.
Latin America
has been becoming more and more divided over the choice between a partnership
with the U.S. and a search for alternative alliances, but why have these
countries come out all of a sudden so strongly against the U.S.? Because of
Russian backing, is a common explanation. And this is largely true, but not
completely and not for the most commonly believed reason.

Good Glob... bad Glob...

Many people (including myself) often criticizes globalization. There
are so many dark sides on this process that is quickly involving all of us
somehow. There is, in other words, a bad globalization that have to be changed,
or slowed down.
But there is also a good globalization, that bring value to the most of
us. I thought this was a good topic for a fist short post of this blog, because
it was made in Bucharest, 1.911 km from Milan, where I live.
I haven't chosen my partner in Romania because of money, but because it
was hard for me to find here in Italy somebody able to put into practice, at a
reasonable price, what I had in mind. So I called for estimates in four
countries and I chose the best offer around. This was my very first experience
of offshore outsourcing. The perfect relation is the one who creates value for
who deal in it, and also for who doesn't. This website has created a good value
for me and for the consultant who helped me in Bucharest. It also was good for
the environment, because bytes doesn't emit CO2 in the ecosystem while they are
moving around and doesn't even consume fuel.
Welcome all to this blog!
